 Travel Tips

  • Learn a few words/phrases in the local language: locals will always try to help you more if you at least attempt to speak their language (it doesn't matter if it's not perfect, they appreciate the effort!)

  • Take some photos with you of friends and family back home, great for the occasional bout of homesickness!

  • If you will be travelling around a lot, try to keep your backpack and contents under 12kg,
    less is better.

  • Don't take shorts to Europe, no European wears them

  • When applying for jobs, always look your smartest. That means washed hair, clean ironed clothes and polished shoes (this is particularly so in France and Italy)

  • This one is for the girls: If you are participating in a Working holiday in Italy, make sure your shoes and bag match! No I'm not kidding; Italians believe that if you are up to date in the fashion stakes, you will be up to date and attentive work-wise. We're not talking $1000 Gucci numbers, but ones that look smart and can be cleaned/polished.

  • Renting/sharing in Europe can be expensive, so be prepared to pay up to 750Euro per month (around $AU1250)

  • As tempting as it is to hang around expat hangouts (particularly in the UK), try to go outside of your comfort zone and make friends with the locals. What's the point in leaving Australia if you just hang out with Aussies?!

  • Take at least 2 ways to access your funds: eg Credit card, ATM card, travellers cheques

  • In the money stakes, more is always better. Take as much as you can overseas. If you have a birthday coming up, or it's close to Christmas, ask for travelling donations instead of presents!

  • Essentials for any Working/backpacking holiday:
    • Swiss army knife (remember to pack it in your check-in luggage)

    • CV on disk

    • Small First Aid Kit

    • Phrasebook

    • Sense of humour!
