Professional Internships in Australia
What is a Professional Internship?
A professional internship is custom-designed practical work experience within an organisation in Australia. Each internship is tailored according to the individual’s skills, experience and educational qualifications or current area of study, guaranteeing a placement’s suitability, relevancy and success. All industries are catered for: from administration to accountancy, biological research to animal research, there is a 100% success rate!
Where are the Internships?
The internships are all in either multinational or medium to big reputable Australian companies.
There are more than 2000 companies in just about every area and field you can imagine.
What will I achieve during my internship?
- You will receive regular calls and visits from us to check on your progress.
- A real advantage when looking for a job whether it's here in Australia or back in your country.
- A reference from the organization.
- A real hands-on perspective of an international work environment.
Are the Professional Internships Paid?
The vast majority of our internships are unpaid, however some companies make a small contribution to some of the interns' living expenses. Interns should be prepared to do an unpaid internship as we are unable to guarantee a paid internship. Payments are usually quite minimal anyway and would not be enough to supplement living expenses.
What are the other Benefits of doing an Internship with Launchpad Australia?
The program is custom designed with a company that suits your needs. This training period with industry professionals will give you invaluable work experience in your area of interest. All companies are reputable and have been vetted by our associate office in Sydney. All companies are located in the city of your choice, and many of these companies have experience dealing with international interns. You will always have an immediate supervisor at the company that will be responsible for your training.
An Internship can be a great first step in getting practical experience in your chosen field and a great alternative to sitting in a classroom! You’re out there having fun, building your CV and internationalising your career!
How Long does it take to find a Professional Internship?
A minimum of 8 weeks notice (minimum of 14 weeks if you are applying for a Special Visa 416- Internship Visa) is required in order to be able to give the company plenty of notice, have the program custom designed in time for your arrival, and arrange visas.
Is there a way to speed things up?
There is an Express Service designed to offer applicants the possibility to start their internships earlier than 8 weeks from the time of application. This excludes the visa processing time. The Express service means that if you need to start your internship in less than 8 weeks for any reason, then your application is treated as a priority. Keep in mind that if you are applying for a Special Visa 416 the minimum time with the Express Service is 10 weeks. This service attracts an additional fee of $AU420.
By choosing the Express service, you still need to provide us with a minimum of 4 weeks notice. This excludes the visa processing time. If for any reason we are unable to arrange the internship on your requested start date you may then either choose to get a full refund of the Express service fee or continue with your application at a later start date, in which case normal cancellation and refunds terms and conditions apply.
What if an Internship can’t be found?
Our partners have a 100% success rate so we are confident an internship will be found. However if for any reason we are unable to find you an adequate internship to meet your needs, you will get all your deposit back. There are no administration fees. (Please note that if you are applying under a Special Visa 416 where all fees are payable at time of application, all paid fees are returned in full except visa fees).
What if I cancel my Internship?
If you change your mind before starting an internship or you want to cancel after starting your internship, you may be liable to a cancellation fee. Please see our terms and conditions (at the bottom of the application form).
What sort of Visa do I need?
Non-Australian citizens/residents usually come here on one of the following visas:
- Student Visa
- Working Holiday Visa
- 416 special visa
Most commonly, participants will come on a Working Holiday Visa or a Student Visa. To view the eligibility criteria for all the above visas, please visit the Department of Immigration website www.immi.gov.au. A guide can be viewed below:
Visas
Working Holiday Visa
This is a 12-month visa, which permits the holder to do an internship or work for any one company for a maximum of 6 months.
This is a 12-month visa, which permits the holder to undertake an internship (paid or unpaid) for an internship host company for a maximum of 6 months during the 12 months. This means that interns can do an internship for more than 6 months but have to change companies after 6 months.
Australia has a reciprocal agreement with certain countries thus allowing young people from those countries to obtain the visa. These countries include the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Japan, Korea, UK, Ireland, Malta, Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Italy, France, Belgium, Estonia and Taiwan.
Australia is also negotiating with a number of other countries in order to be included on the working holiday visa scheme, so make sure you contact your nearest Australian embassy/consulate to check.
Working holiday visas are great for those who wish to do an internship for up to 12 weeks and are looking to combine their internship with some travelling and adventure in Australia. You can also study for a maximum of 3 months on this visa.
416 Special Program Visa
The visa allows interns to do an internship for any length of time (max 12 months). Our Partner is authorised by Dept. of Immigration to issue a letter of invitation for obtaining this visa. This visa is normally issued for the length of the internship. It can be issued for a maximum of 12 months. The visa allows the interns to do an internship for any length of time (max 12 months). Interns are also able to get paid by the host company.
Interns are also allowed to study for a maximum of 20% of the length of the visa.
This visa is particularly great for interns looking to combine their internship with a short refresher English course prior the internship.
To be eligible for a Special Visa 416, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be aged between 18-30 at the time of application;
- Have applied to do an internship in a field related to your academic background;
- Be currently studying or a recent graduate. “Recent Graduate” refers to studies completed within the last 1-2 years. The studies need not be at a tertiary level; they can be a related diploma or certificate course, part time or full time, for a minimum of 1 year. Recent High School graduates may qualify if you are able to provide evidence of attending courses which directly relate to the internship field, as well as any evidence confirming you are looking to enter into a related degree at university.
- Have a genuine interest in doing an internship in Australia.
Student Visa
These visas are granted when the student enrols in an accredited college or educational institution to study in Australia. Students who come to Australia to study are also entitled to do an internship. Student visas are not automatically granted with work rights, and so students may need to apply for that separately when or after applying for the visa. These visas are granted when the student enrols in an accredited college or educational institution to study in Australia.
Student visas cannot be issued if you are doing an internship only.
Students are able to intern for 20 hours a week and full time during their semester breaks. There are quite a number of students undertaking an internship on a part time basis while studying at colleges and institutions. Part time internships are usually for longer periods, thus the student gains more experience and spends more time with the employer. The student will receive a reference from the internship host company for a longer period!
