Working in Hospitality in the UK


No need to rock up to the UK without a job, get a job before you even arrive! Work in a 3, 4 or even 5 star hotel with on-site accommodation to boot! From waiting positions, reception staff to a range a chef positions, there are loads of jobs out there just waiting to be filled! Our Hospitality UK placements, through JCR Intercultural Exchange Programs Pty Ltd., will assist you right from the beginning.

What Kind of Jobs are Available and What Does the Work Entail?

How Much will I be Paid?
This will vary depending on your skills and experience, the following is a guide to basic rates of pay:
  • Chef de Rang: £9,500 per year.
  • Waiter: £8,000 per year
  • Chef de partie: £16,000 per year
  • Chambermaid: £583-625 per month.
  • Commis Waiter: £625 – 666 per month
  • Reception Staff: £833 -1100 per month
  • Kitchen Porter: £542-625 per month.
  • Commis Chef: £12,000 per year
  • Demi chef de partie: £12,000 per year
  • Chefs from £26,000 per year
Is Accommodation Included?
Yes, live in accommodation and on-duty meals will be provided.

How Long are Placements For?
Generally placements are for a minimum of 1 year. There could be a long wait for a 6 month placement.

What kind of skills and experience do I need?
General eligibility criteria includes:
  • You are a mature and responsible individual who is willing to commit to the full term of the contract
  • Have completed either a certificate, diploma or a degree with some relevant recent experience in your field of hospitality OR
    Have completed at least year 10 and have recently worked for at least a year in your field of hospitality
  • Are conversant in English
  • Are energetic and enthusiastic
  • Are prepared to take the position that is offered and agreed on, and to do it to the best of your ability
  • Are in good health
  • Are a citizen or a permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand or a citizen of a Commonwealth country presently living in Australia or New Zealand
For chef positions, you may require certification, however you may also be placed if you have a number of years experience. Any of the other restaurant positions will favour hospitality experience (excluding bar work) very highly, eg silver service, banqueting or function experience, etc

Reception/porter positions will require a strong level of customer service or similar experience.

Remember the more experience/skills you have to offer the better your salary can be!

What Will My Working Hours Be?
Shift work is the norm in the hospitality industry, with an average of 40 working hours per week.

Do I Apply for My Visa Before I Apply for Hospitality UK?
It is recommended to apply for your working holiday visa before you apply as once a placement is found, many employers will want you to start as soon as possible.

How Much Does it Cost?
For placements in Hospitality UK there is a non-refundable deposit of $AU150 required at time of application, and placement fee of $350 is payable once a placement has been found.

How Much Time in Advance Do I Need to Apply?
2 months in advance from time of submitted application.

Click here to download a pre-application form and send the completed form to Launchpad Australia. Once received, we will contact you for an informal phone interview (this is done to assess your needs and determine your experience and suitability).

You can fax the form to us on 03 9445 9375, post it to Launchpad Australia at PO Box 2525 Fitzroy VIC 3065 or email it to workingholiday@launchpadaustralia.com

Once we have assessed you, you will be sent out the full application forms which need to be completed and returned to Launchpad Australia along with your $AU150 deposit (this can be done through Direct Deposit, Bank Cheque or Money Order to Launchpad Australia).

From here JCR will be taking care of your application and organising your placement. Once a position has been found for you, you are required to pay the placement fee and security bond directly to JCR.
