Health Internship in Accra, Ghana - I to I

I-to-I are the leaders in providing exceptional volunteer and internship placements in a variety of areas around the world.
This is a chance to bring your knowledge of western medicine to one of Ghana's leading medical centres. The centre treats up to 500 patients every day, meaning staff are in need of lots of extra help. In return, you will get a real measure of their culture and it is also an opportunity for you to enhance your experience and skills within the medical field. You must be a health professional, student or have had work experience in medicine to participate in this project.
The Holy Trinity Medical Centre is one of the leading medical centres in Ghana and has been providing excellent medical care to patients for over 16 years. It is a well resourced private clinic and has a variety of departments treating between 350 and 500 patients each day. There are currently 27 doctors, many of whom also act as consultants and lecturers at the University of Ghana, as well as 27 nurses and other medical staff to assist the patients. Holy Trinity has the capacity to accommodate 40 patients at any one time and operates 24 hours a day. In Ghana, efforts are underway to improve the health facilities. With your experience of the Western health service, you will be able to bring unique skills and a fresh perspective to the project. In exchange, you will gain a valuable insight into Ghana culture and will have the opportunity to improve your skills in a variety of areas in health care.
Requirements:
This placement is for healthcare professionals and students studying or planning to study medicine or a medical-related subject. You will need to have either previous medical experience/work placements (this can include work shadowing) or qualifications. A copy of your CV and a covering letter is required to apply. You should be compassionate, patient, have a positive attitude and enthusiasm. Volunteers need to develop an understanding of the Ghanaian culture and be able to adapt to their way of working. Minimum project length is 4 weeks, maximum is 12 weeks. Please note this is NOT a placement where you will earn a wage.
Your activities will depend largely on your experience, but may include some of the following:
- Going for ward rounds with doctors to examine cases and determine the next line of action;
- Following up cases and ensuring that proper medication is dispensed;
- Helping to take patients' histories and subsequent diagnosis;
- Helping with general consultation activities;
- Observing procedures.
All the projects are based in the capital city, Accra, with shops, banks and internet cafes nearby. Volunteers stay in shared self-catering accommodation. Based on the coast, this vibrant city is renowned for its friendly atmosphere where visitors are always welcomed. It is full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern infrastructure.
Program Costs:  
A 4 week Health Internship in Accra will cost $AU2985/$US1895/£1195.
